A time of rejoicing or celebration. Originally, in Hebrew history, a yearlong celebration occurring every fifty years during which time all slaves were freed, mortgage land was returned to the owners and agricultural land was left untilled From the Hebrew word “yobel,” indicating the ram’s horn used to announce the year of celebration.
